1 .   Longevity and uncertain nature of duration of          post-retirement period   During the last century the developed countries have experienced an unprecedented increase in longevity. Longevity is attractive much attention in the literature. There are numerous study of longevity and his effect and just to name a few among life insurance actuaries(1) , financial and economists(2) and demographers(3)  .
במהלך ה- 200 שנה האחרונות חל גידול דרמטי בתוחלת החיים בעולם. בתחילת המאה ה- 19 הייתה תוחלת החיים בלידה בטווח של
5 – 40  שנה ובסוף המאה ה- 20 ,תוחלת החיים בלידה ,בארצות עשירות כבר עוברת את ה – 80 שנה (Maddison , 2001). הגידול נבע בעיקר מהשיפור ברמת ההיגיינה וברמת התברואה, מהשיפור בתנאי הבריאות והתזונה, מהירידה הדרמטית בתמותת תינוקות, גילוי האנטיביוטיקה , ההתקדמות העצומה ברפואה וכן מעליית ההכנסה וההשכלה. הגידול הרב ביותר התרחש בחלקים העשירים ביותר של העולם, אך אותן תוצאות מתפשטות כעת לעוד חלקים בעולם עם השיפור בכלכלה ובתשתית בהם.
רוב הדיון בספרות מתמקד בתמורות שחלו במשך החיים – או בתוחלת החיים בלידה.
בעבודה זו נאיר נקודה חשובה, אשר לא זכתה לטיפול מעמיק בספרות והיא מידת אי-הודאות שקשורה בתהליך התארכות משך החיים. ניתוח זה יביא אותנו למסקנות כלכליות חשובות הקשורות לתכנון הפנסיה מנקודת ראות מיקרו ומקרו כלכלית.
במהלך הפרק אנו נסקור בתמציתיות כמה מהתמורות שחלו בארצות הברית, לאורך 150 השנה האחרונות, בפרספקטיבה רחבה, וכן נסביר ונציג סטטיסטיקות בנושא.
