Today’s global age forces marketing professionals to struggle with different marketing approaches. Some argue that consumers around the world are more similar to each other than different. Therefore, marketers should adopt a global strategy that essentially tries to sell everyone everywhere in the same manner. Others argue that people from different cultures are fundamentally different and therefore marketing approaches must vary across cultures. Still others claim that both approaches may be correct depending on the product being sold. After reviewing 12
academic research papers on the subject of cultural marketing, and embarking on our own empirical research exploring how culture impacts consumer behavior, we conclude that despite an increasing trend towards globalization, people from different cultures have different values and therefore react to various products differently. Consequently, to maximize reach and brand awareness, marketers can ill afford to ignore cultural differences among their target audiences. To be a successful marketer in today’s global age, one must take culture into account.
